A Selfcare Super-Tool – Warming Socks!

This time of year, when we are locked indoors, eating a lot of stuff we probably shouldn’t be – and our immune systems are on constant guard – challenged, and sometimes even defeated.

Why warming socks? Because this tried and true hydrotherapy technique is an excellent tool to use at the first sign of an acute viral infection to beat it, OR as a great way to keep your lymphatics in good shape and your immune response balanced throughout the winter (or really all year round) – a great weekly addition to your self-care.

A great addition is a few drops of an appropriate essential oil (I love Thieves) to the soles of your feet before doing the socks.

The contrast between the cold and hot (see instructions below) increases circulation and flushes the lymphatics to supercharge the immune system and increase the healing response during acute infections.

The warming sock treatment is also reduces general inflammation and is great for pain relief.

A BONUS is it’s calming effect which makes for a great night’s sleep.

Great for anyone – old and young!

Effects of the Warming Sock Treatment

With the contrast of cold and the gradual warming, this treatment serves to increase the circulation of blood and lymph and reduce congestion in the upper respiratory passages, head, and throat. It has a calming action and many patients report that they sleep much better during the treatment. The warming sock treatment is also effective for pain relief and increases the healing response during acute infections.

Supplies

  • a nice warm bed

  • 1 pair of thin cotton socks

  • 1 pair thick wool socks

  • warm bath or foot bath if required

  • a nice warm bed

Directions

  • Soak the pair of thin cotton socks completely with the coldest water possible. Be sure to wring the socks out thoroughly so they do not drip.

  • Warm your feet first. This is very important as the treatment will not be as effective and could be harmful if your feet are cold when beginning the treatment. Warming can be accomplished by soaking your feet in warm water for at least 5-10 minutes or by taking a warm bath.

  • Dry off feet and place cold, wet, well wrung socks on feet.

  • Place the thick dry wool socks over the wet cotton socks and go to bed. Avoid getting chilled.

  • Keep the socks on overnight. You will find that the wet socks will be warm and dry in the morning.

The warming sock treatment is best if repeated for three consecutive nights, or as instructed by your naturopathic doctor.
