Why Autoimmune Diseases Are Increasing: Understanding the Immune System, Gut Health, and MS

Why Are Autoimmune Diseases Skyrocketing? Let’s Talk About the Immune System

Over the past 25 years in practice, I’ve watched something quite remarkable—and concerning—happen.

The number of people being diagnosed with autoimmune conditions, including multiple sclerosis (MS), has absolutely skyrocketed.

And after living with MS myself for over 40 years, and working with thousands of people, I keep coming back to one very important question:

Why are autoimmune diseases increasing so rapidly?

Why is the immune system—this incredibly intelligent, protective system—losing its ability to tolerate our own tissues?

Because that’s really what autoimmunity is.

It’s not your body “attacking itself”…It’s a loss of immune tolerance.

And when I step back and look at what’s changed over the years, the answer becomes a little clearer.

We are living in a time of constant immune barrage.

The Immune System and Gut Health: Where It All Begins

Before we go any further, there’s something really important to understand:

70–80% of your immune system lives in your gut.

Now, I know that might not be the first place your mind goes when you think about MS… your thyroid… or your joints.

Most people don’t immediately think:

“This might be starting in my gut.”

But it is.

Your gut is where your immune system is constantly learning—what is safe… and what is not.

This is the foundation of immune balance and regulation.

Leaky Gut and Autoimmunity: What Happens When the Barrier Breaks Down

A healthy gut lining acts like a very intelligent filter.

It lets nutrients in… and keeps larger, potentially problematic particles out.

But when that lining becomes irritated or compromised—what we often call “leaky gut” (intestinal permeability)—things start slipping through that shouldn’t be there.

Now we have unidentified proteins and particles entering the bloodstream.

And your immune system is left trying to figure out:

What is this?I

s it safe?

Do I react?

When this is happening occasionally, the system can handle it.

But when it’s happening all the time…

That’s when the confusion begins.

Common Symptoms of Immune Imbalance

This is often where symptoms start to make more sense.

You may be experiencing:

  • fatigue that doesn’t quite add up

  • brain fog or difficulty concentrating

  • fluctuating neurological symptoms

  • chronic or unpredictable inflammation

And nowhere along the way did anyone say:

“Let’s look at your gut health.”

But we should.

Because when the gut becomes permeable, we often see a similar pattern in the blood-brain barrier.

Which means those same unidentified particles can begin interacting with immune tissue in the brain.

Now the immune system is not only overwhelmed…

It’s misdirected.

What Causes Autoimmune Disease? (The Modern Lifestyle Connection)

This is the part that matters most.

Because this is where you have influence.

When I look at this clinically, again and again, it comes back to the realities of modern life.

Diet and stress are at the top of the list.

We are relying more on:

  • highly processed, convenient foods

  • sugar and caffeine to keep us going

  • irregular meals and rushed eating habits

And at the same time, we are living in a near-constant state of stress.

This combination is enough to begin breaking down the gut lining and disrupting immune function.

Which is exactly why…

You hear me talk about nutrition and lifestyle so often.

Not because it’s trendy.

But because it’s one of the most powerful ways to reduce immune system burden and inflammation.

You Don’t Need to “Boost” Your Immune System

I want to be really clear about this.

We don’t need to push the immune system harder.

We need to help it regulate and make sense of what it’s seeing again.

This is about:

  • calming the immune response

  • reducing inflammation

  • restoring balance and tolerance

If This Is Starting to Make Sense…

If you’re reading this and thinking:

“No one has ever explained autoimmunity to me this way…”

or

“This actually makes sense—but how does this apply to me?”

You’re not alone.

Most people I work with have been trying to piece this together on their own for a long time.

An Invitation to Go Deeper: Understanding MS and the Immune System

On Saturday, April 4, 2026 at 1:00pm Eastern, I’m hosting our next MS Masterclass:

This is not a lecture.

It’s a small, interactive group where we take the time to slow this down and make it personal.

We’ll look at:

  • what may be driving your immune response

  • how your symptoms fit into the bigger picture

  • where you can begin to influence this process in a realistic, sustainable way

Because when you understand what’s actually going on…

You stop guessing.

And you can start moving forward with clarity and confidence.
